The Festival anounces the following:

STATEMENT REGARDING THE SUSPENSION OF THE FESTIVAL INTERNACIONAL DE MÚSICA DE SEVILLA

Seville, August 4th, 2004

The management of the Festival Internacional de Música de Sevilla did not succeed in finding an adequate replacement for Maestro Lorin Maazel. The difficulties encountered in this task are mainly due to two reasons: firstly, because similar personalities are engaged in festivals all over the world and secondly, due to orchestras touring. Maestro Lorin Maazel had to cancel due to an emergency eye operation which became necessary and his doctors strictly forbade him to engage in any physical activities for at least four to six weeks. Unfortunately, this falls exactly into the rehearsal and performance period of the Festival.

Despite the situation, Maestro Lorin Maazel was one of the leading protagonists in this production together with Carlos Saura due to their previous involvements in Carmen-related movies and performances.

The management of the Festival decided not to compromise the quality of the artistic performances, therefore the decision was made to inform the public of the suspension of the Festival.

The City of Sevilla authorities have been informed.

During the next four to six weeks, the Festival will decide on a plan of postponement along with a new date for the possible renewal of the project in coordination with the engaged artists.

The package arrangements and tickets remain valid. The new dates of the Festival will be published in the near future!
